Nature of the Work
The SEA Optical Sorter Technician – Midwest Region supports the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and service of SEA optical sorting equipment at customer sites throughout the Midwest. This is a field service role designed for technicians with strong electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical fundamentals who are motivated to grow into an independent optical sorter specialist through hands-on training and mentorship.
This position is home‑based, with primary dispatch and coordination centered around the Urbandale, IA area.
Duties & Responsibilities

Assist with installation, commissioning, and startup of SEA optical sorting equipment.

Support troubleshooting of electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and software-related issues.

Perform preventive maintenance and corrective service tasks under guidance.

Assist with camera calibration, lighting setup, and ejector alignment.
-
Learn recipe adjustments and defect selection logic to optimize sorter performance.

Read and interpret electrical schematics, I/O drawings, and technical documentation.

Interface professionally with customer operators and maintenance personnel.

Complete service reports and documentation accurately and on time.

Provide remote support assistance as assigned.

Travel throughout the Midwest to support customer sites.
Requirements
Knowledge/Abilities/Skills
Electrical & Controls
-
Fundamental industrial electrical troubleshooting skills
-
Ability to read basic electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
-
Exposure to 3‑phase power systems
-
Familiarity with 24VDC and 110–230VAC control circuits
-
Ability to safely use a multimeter for troubleshooting
Optical Sorting / Vision Systems
-
Experience with optical sorters or vision-based inspection systems preferred but not required
-
General understanding of automated inspection, sensing, or detection systems
-
Willingness and aptitude to learn camera calibration, lighting setup, and defect selection
-
Comfort working around machine‑mounted sensors and feedback devices
Pneumatics & Mechanics
-
Basic knowledge of pneumatic systems and solenoid valves
-
Exposure to air ejectors or compressed air systems
-
Understanding of product flow and chute setup
-
Strong hands‑on mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
Software, PLC & Controls Exposure
-
Proficient with Windows-based industrial computers
-
Comfortable navigating file systems and performing basic backups
-
Familiarity with HMIs and basic diagnostics
-
Exposure to PLC systems for monitoring status or I/O (programming not required)
-
Willingness to learn remote support tools (VPN, TeamViewer, etc.)
Education and Experience
-
Satisfactory completion of a two year (minimum), post secondary Vocational/Technical school of study in one or more of the following areas; electrical, electronics, robotics, mechanical systems or maintenance engineering and 1-4 year industrial experience; or

High school diploma or its equivalent and 2-6 years industrial maintenance experience.

Extensive travel will be required.

Candidate should possess or be able to obtain a passport.

Must have clean driving record and valid drivers license.

Candidate may be asked to work weekends, 2nd or 3rd Shifts, and some holidays.

Candidate will be asked to work in harsh environments such as hot or cold weather conditions, dust and some possible hazardous conditions.
-
Candidate may be required to work on elevated platforms or scaffolding and in confined spaces.
-
Be able to lift up to 70 pounds.
-
Drug & Alcohol testing per customer requirements, subject to state law.
